Fulbourn Arts presented a Classworks Theatre + Fulbourn Community Production at The Fulbourn Centre – September 2013
Hard Times-5

The posters and programmes showing the circus white horse jumping through a grim mill wheel and leaving the industrial smoke behind summed up Charles Dickens’ belief in the possibility of a better world.  and they can be seen too as representing the success of  Jenny Culank, the Director, in staging for Fulbourn a dramatised version of the novel.

Dickens could write at speed with his pen, drawing people and places out of his head; Jenny had to persuade and encourage dozens of people – ‘aged eight to eighty’ to join her in fulfilling her vision of a play that could still speak to us about our society through serious and comic dialogue, through singing and dancing, through browbeaten children being marched to school, through the politicians who emerged ponderously from among us in the audience, through Tarka the dog so happily jumping through HIS wheel as the Circus folk triumphed over Coketown. It was a splendid finale with everyone contributing to the confident movement up and down the acting area.

This is not a play for dominant individual roles – appropriately for a community enterprise – but the exchanges between the bombastic Mr Bounderby and the insinuating Mrs Sparsit contrasted well with the sentiment of the Gradgrind family episodes.

What a good advertisement for Fulbourn Arts  and for Classworks Theatre

with such a range of costumes and theatrical skills to call on. What an example too for anyone needing to reach out to the community. We can look back only with gratitude, and forward  – with anticipation!
