Fulbourn Nature Reserve was the venue for an ambitious adaptation of The Insect Play, a powerful anti-war satire written just after the First World War. Performed by Classworks Youth Theatre on Wednesday 7th July, it was directed by Lucy Crowe and Fulbourn’s Jenny Culank. It was greatly enjoyed by an enthusiastic audience as shown by the short review below by Drama teacher Kay Blayney, who brought fifteen Year 10 GCSE Drama students from the Parkside Federation:
“The whole experience of going to see a piece of theatre by well known Classworks Youth Theatre Company at a local nature reserve was very appealing in itself to the students, as well as the added bonus of an end of term picnic prior to the show on a sunny July evening – perfect! And judging by the rest of the audience it appealed to young and old alike.
Certainly, an adventurous evening from the outset, where, as you arrived at the entrance you were given the opportunity to spray insect repellant on yourself! Blankets and programmes were also distributed and then on to the exploration of the first scene which was set in a dry river bed in the heart of the woods. Brightly coloured butterflies played out their flirtatious games as if at an end of year school prom. We followed their flight to another woodland setting to discover the lives of the greedy dung beetles, home loving crickets, spoilt babies (larvae) and parasites – displaying what were all too recognizable human characteristics. The evening ended in the old orchard where we sat on logs or blankets in the sunset, while an army of “peace-loving” ants waged war on their compatriots to protect their democratic society.
This fantastic outdoor event of fine acting with lavish insect costumes and different settings was full of surprises, including spectacular break-dance sequences. It was a summer event to remember.”
